In Today’s Issue

EJ Impacts Solid Waste Proposal

Environmental justice (EJ) apparently played a significant part in EPA’s proposal to revise the definition of “solid waste” that the G.W. Bush EPA issued in 2008 in a rule that was generally welcomed by industry.

Third TSCA Rule for Nanotubes

EPA has expanded its regulation of nanomaterials by issuing a significant new use rule (SNUR) for multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) that were generically identified in a premanufacture notice (PMN). Under the SNUR, any company that wishes to manufacture, import, or process this specific MWCNT in ways that differ from the use scenarios established in the PMN must submit a significant new use notice (SNUN) to EPA 90 days in advance of initiating that activity.

Safety Incentive Programs: Effective, Legal Ways To Boost Safety—Without Discouraging Reporting

Thursday, August 11, 2011
10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (PST)
11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (MST)
12:30 to 2:00 p.m. (CST)
1:30 to 3:00 p.m. (EST)

In theory, safety incentive programs are a great idea—you give workers rewards for staying safe on the job. Proper motivation = better behavior, right?
Unfortunately, the reality can often be quite different. Improperly designed safety incentive programs can actually make your workplace less safe, by discouraging employees from reporting accidents and near-misses. That’s the last thing you want.
How to motivate safe workplace behaviors without creating negative disincentives that could actually hurt you (and your workers) more in the long run? Join us for an illuminating webinar on August 11 and find out.
You and your colleagues will learn:
  • How to evaluate your safety culture and identify areas in which you can improve
  • How to collect, analyze, and process data into actionable goals for building a workplace culture in which workplace safety is valued
  • The key steps to engaging a workforce that takes responsibility for safety on the job
  • How to encourage and reward safety without discouraging reporting of accidents and near-misses
  • Which safety metrics need to be tracked—and why
  • How to sustain big cultural changes, like a true focus on safety, over the long haul
  • What to do about managers who encourage productivity at the expense of safety
  • What you need to say to senior management to get buy-in
  • How to report progress and meet critical milestones
